Thomas Wolsey Ormiston Academy
Music Therapy for SEND Pupils
Supporting communication, wellbeing and expression through therapeutic enrichment
Thomas Wolsey Ormiston Academy used music therapy to support pupils with SEND to communicate, express themselves and engage in meaningful therapeutic enrichment.
Delivered by Suffolk Music Therapy Services between June 2024 and June 2025, the project reached approximately 90–100 pupils. Every class received a block of 5–6 sessions, with additional small-group and individual provision for pupils with more personalised needs.

What pupils did
Pupils used music as a way to communicate, express themselves and interact with others.
Sessions included songwriting, singing, improvisation and other musical activities, tailored to each pupil or group.
Pupils were referred for a range of reasons, including communication and language, social and emotional needs, social interaction, bereavement support, transition to college, relaxation and meaningful interaction with peers.

The impact
Across the year, around 330 sessions were delivered. Staff reported that pupils became more vocal, made choices more quickly, showed anticipation before sessions and demonstrated greater willingness to engage.
The project shows how enrichment can be creative, therapeutic and highly personalised. For OT, it is a strong example of how grant funding can help pupils with SEND access meaningful opportunities that support communication, wellbeing, confidence and inclusion.
