Mpower Cambridgeshire

Breaking cycles of trauma and supporting safer futures

Mpower Cambridgeshire supports women with multiple and complex needs who have experienced, or are at risk of experiencing, children being removed and placed into care.

Delivered in Fenland and Peterborough by Ormiston Families, the service provides long-term, trauma-informed support to help women rebuild stability, process trauma and loss, and work towards safer, healthier futures.

What women did

Women received one-to-one support from a trusted practitioner, alongside group work, practical help, life story work, reproductive health support and support to engage with other services.

The service is built around a non-judgemental relationship, asking “what happened to you?” rather than “what’s wrong with you?” This helps women feel heard, build trust and begin to make informed choices about their future.

The impact

Mpower has more than 12 years’ experience delivering this type of support. Earlier evidence from Suffolk and Cambridgeshire showed that 63 women were supported in one previous year, with 98% pausing further pregnancies during engagement and 81% working towards personal goals.

More recent Cambridgeshire-focused evidence shows that 47 women were supported in the previous year, with 87% pausing further pregnancies during engagement and 81% working towards personal goals.

Current reporting also shows that two mothers were supported to retain care of their babies during the reporting period. Mpower is also working with Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust’s Perinatal Trauma and Loss Service to strengthen local pathways and joined-up support.
