Therapeutic Enrichment for Preparing Students for Adulthood

Using enrichment, communication and therapy to support young people with SEND

Condover College is a special post-16 institution that uses enrichment as part of a wider strategy to support young people with SEND to prepare for adulthood.

Its approach shows that enrichment does not have to mean only clubs, trips or sport. For young people with SEND, enrichment can also include therapeutic, communication-based and life-skills experiences that help build confidence, independence and autonomy.

Students took part in enrichment linked to independent living, communication, wellbeing and preparation for adulthood.

his included community-based learning, life-skills practice, safety and digital literacy, total communication strategies and therapy-based activities.

The government enrichment framework highlights that therapies, including music therapy, can support emotional regulation, engagement, turn-taking and following instructions.

The impact

Condover College provides a useful external example of how enrichment can be designed around the needs of young people with SEND.

The case study is relevant to Ormiston Trust because it supports the idea that therapeutic enrichment, including music therapy, can form part of a meaningful wider enrichment offer. It shows that inclusive enrichment should be designed around communication, wellbeing, independence and individual outcomes.
